چکیده

This paper explores the use of an oft-ignored information source in heuristic search: a search-distance-to-go estimate. Operators frequently have different costs and cost-to-go is not the same as search-distance-to-go. We evaluate two previous proposals: dynamically weighted A∗ and A∗ ǫ . We present a revision to dynamically weighted A∗ that improves its performance substantially in domains where the search does not progress uniformly towards solutions, and particularly in certain temporal planning problems. We show how to incorporate distance estimates into weighted A∗ and improve its performance in several domains. Both approaches lead to dramatic performance increases in popular benchmark domains.

Multiple Target Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Sensor Grouping and Hybrid Iterative-Heuristic Optimization

A novel hybrid method for tracking multiple indistinguishable maneuvering targets using a wireless sensor network is introduced in this paper. The problem of tracking the location of targets is formulated as a Maximum Likelihood Estimation. We propose a hybrid optimization method, which consists of an iterative and a heuristic search method, for finding the location of targets simultaneously. T...

An LP-Based Heuristic for Optimal Planning

One of the most successful approaches in automated planning is to use heuristic state-space search. A popular heuristic that is used by a number of state-space planners is based on relaxing the planning task by ignoring the delete effects of the actions. In several planning domains, however, this relaxation produces rather weak estimates to guide search effectively. We present a relaxation usin...

Using Distance Estimates in Heuristic Search: A Re-evaluation

Traditionally, heuristic search algorithms have relied on an estimate of the cost-to-go to speed up problem-solving. In many domains, operators have different costs and estimated cost-to-go is not the same as estimated search-distance-togo. We investigate further accelerating search by using a distance-to-go function. We evaluate two previous proposals: Dynamically weighted A∗ and A∗ ǫ . We pre...

A Hybrid Meta-heuristic for the Dynamic Layout Problem with Transportation System Design

This paper primarily presents a comprehensive dynamic layout design model which integrates layout and transportation system design via considering more realistic assumptions, such as taking account of fixed-position departments and distance between departments that endanger each other. In addition, specific criteria such as capacity, cost and reliability of facilities are considered in transpor...

Speedy versus Greedy Search

In work on satisficing search, there has been substantial attention devoted to how to solve problems associated with local minima or plateaus in the heuristic function. One technique that has been shown to be quite promising is using an alternative heuristic function that does not estimate cost-to-go, but rather estimates distance-to-go. Empirical results generally favor using the distance-to-g...
